let's say you planted flowers with me
you knew more about gardening than i did
and wrapped your dirt stained fingers around my own
as the earth smiled happily beneath our bare toes

let's say we had a picnick
i brought deviled eggs
and you brought a bottle of strawberry wine
and we laid out beneath the shade of an old oak tree
and marveled in nature's beauty
and you taught me how to hoola hoop

let's say we crawled into each other's minds
at 2:00am on friday night
we whispered secrets
argued playfully over history
in dates and facts and wine glasses

i played you music and
you read me poetry
as our thoughts curled together
in the smokey haze
like lovers

let's say i wrote a harmony to your laughter
sweet and dissonant in all the right places
and we ignored the clock
ticking backwards ever onward on the wall

let's say we danced barefoot through the moonlight
and your fingers traced rivers down my arms
and your waist was solid beneath my fingers
as we listened to the rhythms

let's say i slept with you
on a bed of sunlight and shining souls
we wove our ribs together
painted flowers on our hipbones
and tattooed peace
on the underside of our jaws

let's say you didn't need words
to express what my brain couldn't quite
shout over the chaos
and your fingers whispered in braille
down the backs of my thighs

let's say we lost ourselves in harmony
and hopelessness and helium and
flew kites along the treetops
just to resonate within the boundaries

but for now
let's just say we didn't quite
get there
